One of those films that feel like I should really like. It has a bleak atmosphere, and delves into themes of loss and the occult; I love all that. However, the film plays a lot with its themes, but does so little with them. Like, at times it felt more like a sociological thriller of being trapped in the same house with a lunatic than everything else.
One of the things why I "dropped out" of occultism (or in reality why I did nothing) is that my stupid ass would have probably fuck-up a step and then, boom, in dead by an entity I shouldn't be playing with.

i really appreciate how religion is depicted in this film, and i did thorough enjoyed it. i think it's one of the more well-done religious horror movies out there that does not overuse certain tropes. with limited characters, limited knowledge and limited area focus is very hitchcock-esque. the scene with the angel was just the most beautiful segment i have seen in a while. asking the power for forgiveness is not a small favour to ask. the most scariest thing about this movie was the fact that joseph was eating fries with a knife and fork!

Atmospheric as hell. I love stories that take place in one location, kinda glad we never saw the demons in full. You can tell the magic in this movie was researched heavily and that effort was depicted in a interesting way

I've heard that A Dark Song has one of the more accurate portrayals of witchcraft in movies and I can see why. It isn't glamourous. It is not gather a few ingredients and lighting a few candles and then it's done. This is a long, grueling, drawn-out process that really is kinda like a war of attrition. You are anxiously waiting for either the ritual to start yielding results or Sophia to start giving up. I am very intrigued by witchcraft and this portrayal was so refreshing that I didn't even mind the slow burn nature of it that doesn't always jive well with me.

The ending was also really good for me. There are very few horror movies where I can say I actively like the endings. This is for a few reasons, namely that I enjoy living in these worlds and the end means I have to exit them, but also because I enjoy the escalation within horror and endings are typically de-escalations. This one, however, escalates with the ending and keeps me grounded within this world until the credits roll. That imagery was awesome. My one complaint is that I didn't really connect with the emotional payoff at all. It was fine, but I wasn't able to bring myself to care about it.

Lastly, the score was so great. Really fit the vibe of the movie well.
