With most of this eras action movies, a big factor as to how good they are is if they have a solid gimmick.
This movie has 2
1. The first half of this movie is pretty explicitly a romantic comedy, and it works pretty well.
2. Chinese martial arts vs Japanese martial arts. Which works incredibly well.
The second half of this movie is the most back to back action I’ve seen in any of the Shaw bros movies so far, and all of it is very good. None of the fights here reach all timer status for me, as Lar Kar-Leung has reached higher highs, but it is all still excellent. If anything.
Like most of these movies, it ends so suddenly, but this time I was a bit disappointed as I wanted the couple to reunite, but we don’t even see the protagonist with his wife at the end! It’s implied of course, but considering the first half spent a lot of time on their relationship, it felt odd not to end with them celebrating together.
Other than that though, a pretty great watch overall
