Milestone’s visual flair is such a breath of fresh air for this time period. I’m sure there were other filmmakers making use of their cameras in ways to enhance the story rather than just capture it, but I haven’t really experienced a whole lot of that yet.
The opening sequence is particularly interesting, and kind of a statement of what the audience can expect. The double exposure during the construction accident, even something as simple as the tracking shot with the beams continuously passing through the frame, it adds so much.
I don’t really think it has the juice narratively, but I have so much time for shit like this.
