I didn’t like the beginning of their relationship I think it could’ve been rewritten as less coercive and everything following it would’ve worked just as well.
I don’t understand this trope of a woman pressuring a man into sex and then he loves it and secretly wanted it all along. Maybe it’s lazy watching on my part but I never picked up on any hints that he secretly wanted her and it seems like lazy writing to fall back on the idea that all men secretly want sex all the time.
Pretty soon though their dynamic grew to be really beautiful and the dialogue between everyone was very well written.
Above all what I liked the most was the representation of a messy, fucked-up, working class middle-aged woman who deserves all of the love from sexy young james spaders.
Still their individual stories were lacking a bit and whatever happened with her kid felt incomplete and like they just threw an explanation in at the end so I think the whole movie could’ve been a lot better, but the ending scene in the cafe was really cute and felt like a proper conclusion.
