The Stone Tapes works better retrospectively than it probably did at the time. The contemporary technology has become obselete. It’s from a time when comet trails on film were still left by naked flame- a gorgeous, albeit unavoidable, result of saticon tubing from the tv cameras. It’s from a time when these sort of jokes were acceptable. It’s a time capsule of effects and content in the same way the stones are. 

The ghost in the machine, as it were, is usurped by the machine becoming a ghost. Nigel Kneale really was one of the best.

Really enjoyed this super dry spook show. I was totally onboard for the technical talky stuff and didn’t expect too much after the initial ghost sighting but this finishes strong.
