The World's Greatest Sinner

A high-pitched scream of a movie.

I clicked on this on Criterion thinking blindly it was actually The World’s Greatest Lover with Gene Wilder and Carol Kane. It only took me a second to realise I had started the wrong film, however I’m always up for an unexpected challenge (as long as watching a film can be considered challenging) so I kept it on.

Because in the same way you need to read the title of the movie in its entirety, you’ve got to finish watching said movie once you’ve started it.

That was definitely something. A salesman grows bored of his routine and decides to start a political party. After seeing a concert, he tries to become some sort of a rock’n’roll messiah (keep in mind that we’re in 1962, so that makes it ten times crazier). Things go awry. Both exhilarating and deeply unsettling at times (all the time). I don’t need to see that much love scenes —especially if minors are involved…

The fake soul patch was a nice touch though, it definitely gave him a more godly look.

The poster for this might be one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen in my life.

Carey could’ve pulled it off with a cowriter and an editor bc tbh I totally buy the narrative he tries to present and the portrait he tries to create of the American bourgeois mentality in the 1950s-60s... he just sorely needed to build out an actual world for this plot to live in. While the message conveyed through this solid groundwork struggles to pull me in as much as this guy’s sense of humor does (definitely indulges in some of the stuff he intends to satirize), I’m still erring on the positive side because of both the legitimate joy I felt watching this clunky ass picture and the (somewhat tragically) unsung potential that lies beneath it. I understand why Cassavetes would want to cast Carey in Killing of a Chinese Bookie because when the editing, writing, camerawork, and sound miraculously line up in this patchwork of a film you can feel such a coveted, eye-catching energy from him. The closest comparison I can give him is probably Nick Cage in the most endearing way possible. Midnight essential if you’re ever near a showing, almost a Frankenstein’s magnum opus of sorts.
