Taking a lot of inspiration (and Jason Shwartzman) from Wes Anderson, Dash Shaw created a unique animated feature in My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea.
My biggest concern going into the film was that it would be all style and no substance, which, while the style is entrancing to watch at times, the movie needs a bit more. Luckily, the film does have substance. Not a whole lot, but enough to hopefully keep you invested in the characters.
As I said, the artwork is great, but there are times throughout the film that the perspective of certain objects is hard to discern, to the point where the artist literally had to write and draw arrows to which side was the front of a bus and which was the back. The size of the sharks also bothered me for some reason. They seemed more like piranhas.
The positives of this movie are that it has a pretty good sense of humor, the art style, for the most part, is pretty great, and it's short.6/10
