Son of the White Mare is genuinely one of the most beautiful animated films of all time, and I couldn't tear my eyes off the screen until the credits started rolling. It's described as 'psychedelic animation', which I totally understand, but rather than having an experience similar to being on drugs, I felt like I was being soothed; I'm not completely sure why, but the gorgeous colours and the way the plot unfolded really did feel like I was a child being told a story by my parents or grandparents. With that being said, aside from all the phallic imagery, I loved the character designs and how fluid the animation was, and the voice-acting was brilliantly done, too. The sound effects were pretty loud, and I'd have liked for them to be a little quieter and the music a bit louder, but that's a very minor complaint in the grand scheme of things. All in all, a fantastic piece of art; if you haven't seen this already, drop everything and watch it immediately.

Marcell Jankovics was a celebrated animation director, often know as the Walt Disney of Hungary’. He was influential as an animator for his chaotic psychedelic 2D style, where foreground and background merged seamlessly. His films are steeped in Hungarian folklore and mythology, and often highly political. 

The Son of the White Mare (1981) certainly meets this criteria. It is a folklore tale about three brothers who unite to track down dragons in the underworld who took over the world from their forefathers. It is a hypnotic and highly vibrant film, full of energy and colour. The fluid animation style supports the films pacing, and provides an immersive viewing experience. However, at times, the narrative is very hard to follow, and analogies or social commentary is not clear to pick up on without analysis or prior knowledge of Hungarian Mythology.

It is easy to understand why this film was overlooked when it first came out, but is now considered a cult classic. It is a challenging watch, with visually pioneering animation, but perhaps falls under the definition of style over substance on too many occasions. 3.5/5.
