“this is such an insult to the book holy shit” would’ve been my original review. but after finishing it, i decided to write a longer review. i think this was bad. this movie does not do shirley jackson’s final novel justice.
one thing i liked about this… was constance’s casting, i wasn’t expecting to like it but i do. it just seems to work, i think alexandra daddario really did a great job with bringing constance to life. i love taissa farmiga, her characters in american horror story are my favourite but i don’t think she was the best choice for merricat. merricat is such a complex character and has so much depth to her and i just failed to see that in this movie. which was supposed to be so important because she’s literally the main character!!
As for uncle julian, there was no life to his character. i don’t know why but i always imagined him to be a old man. like a really… really old man. so uncle julian was not what i was expecting.
i would’ve really liked to see the scene from the book when charles sits down at the table for the first time and constance serves him pancakes, he initially tries to avoid eating it, afraid of eating it because of the fear that it could’ve been poisoned by constance due to the family’s past. but no. they didn’t include it. he just eats it without hesitation. i wish that was included because to me, it was a major key that said a lot about charles’ character so i was a bit disappointed.
it felt as though, i was watching a movie trying to be dark and eerie and nothing like a shirley jackson book. it just feels so different, like it just happened to have the same dialogues as the book and… everything just felt too bright?? it was so unlike the book. there was no eerie feeling to this film. some scenes tried extremely hard but failed to make me feel the uneasiness and gloominess that the book very much made me feel. the book had such a mysterious unearthly tone to it, it was an important element to the book, thats what made it so special so this just felt very dull and badly executed.
