passable. couldn't really get into it because of the quality of the (hard) subtitles. always nice to see takeshi kaneshiro on my screen though, and made me nostalgic for that year or two where all i cared to watch was hong kong cinema. i need to go back to my roots.

I love Mo, what a little freak. The woman is, of course, likewise a complete weirdo, but man, Takeshi Kaneshiro is awesome here. Absolute loser, down on his luck even when he's up, absolutely baffling decision-making. Of course, he's also got some bizarre quirks. I even feel a strange sort of kinship with him. Like him, I'm always giving money to beautiful, strung-out women and then doing whatever they tell me to over the phone.
Of course, speaking of her, the woman also rules. She's never given a name, but she's still one half of the film's heart. There's a moment where she's about to meet Simon and fantasizes about blasting him repeatedly with the handgun under her coat. When he actually walks out, she discovers that Mo actually beat the shit out of Simon fairly brutally, and she starts laughing.
Most of the late scenes are completely fucking fascinating. One of my favorites is the scene where they both end up giving each other haircuts, swap shirts and jackets, and then watch the fireworks. I don't know, the feeling is indescribable. I'm also not ashamed to say that I did tear up when I saw that her manila folder didn't have a gun inside it.
The assassination scene and the aftermath are fucking incredible, though. This is the definition of saving your best material for last.
I haven't watched many Johnnie To flicks, but I'm really starting to suspect I have an unexplored preference.
"I want a magnum." "This is a magnum." "I want another."
alt. quote: "Can you touch my tits?"
alt. quote, while discussing repeatedly severed fingers on the right hand: "I'm sorry." "We rascals are all prepared. This is a rascal's life. We keep on repeating the same thing. This is the destiny of rascals."
