A beautifully shot look at the connection between religion and conscience, Novitiate follows a young woman's struggles with reconciliating her faith with her burgeoning desires. If I'm honest, this was a but of a difficult watch for me; I'm not very religious myself, but seeing the devotion and passion of the nuns made me want to cry, especially when the misogyny of Vatican II demeaned their sacrifice and reduced their positions to the same as any practicing Catholic. Margaret Qualley was fantastic as Sister Cathleen, but Melissa Leo's performance as Reverend Mother was at once suffocating and infuriating, and heart-wrenching; she completely stole the show, in my opinion. If you haven't watched Novitiate, I highly recommend giving it a go, if only for its stunning shots.
