there are very few movies i really, genuinely believe are a vital watch. i implore anyone and everyone to watch this documentary, ESPECIALLY if you live in the USA.
its hard to describe the maelstrom of emotions im feeling. anger, confusion, empathy, but more than anything, this all encompassing, extremely visceral sadness. its probably the saddest, most disturbing thing ive ever watched. 24 years. 24 years man. thats how long this film was censored by the US government. i agonize over the thought of even a single man in there thinking “a movie crew is here! maybe soon people will find out about our living conditions and we will be saved!”, that kindling of hope having sparks thrown upon it, only for it to be slowly snuffed out over decades as hopelessness takes control once more absolutely fucking shatters me. im a sobbing mess as i type this from just thinking about it. my mind will never be able to comprehend the depravities people commit upon others. i get the stanford prison experiment stuff but i just… i cannot wrap my head around it. it makes it SO much worse when you think not only did this likely take place at countless institutions across the country and is STILL HAPPENING AT BRIDGEWATER TO THIS DAY BTW, but also that the US government has sanctioned this behavior for well over a century. it beyond depressing.
one can only hope that at least some of them got out ok, but hope is a hard thing to come by these days.
