I loved the visual language of Peppermint Candy, its reverse narrative structure, and its strong metaphorical concepts. The contrast between the brightness of vivid, lush greenery and the concret cityscapes that, on the contrary, seem completely drained of life is striking. At the same time, both are shot amazingly.
However, I completely disagree with its message. I have 0 compassion for the protagonist, and in my interpretation, he’s just a dick whose sociopathic tendencies are flourishing under an authoritarian regime.
I also don’t believe that he has any regrets regarding what he did to others. He’s only sorry that he failed in life. It definitely goes against the author’s aim, but lost innocence, my ass.
It goes without saying that the incredibly nuanced performance by the lead actor was immaculate. If Kim Yeong-hoE has no haters, then I’m dead.
