A clear personal piece from Coppola, One from the Heart is a stunning film filled with bright neon lights and retro art. It feels like a better version of Coppola’s infamous flop, Megalopolis. And speaking of that film, this too was a brutal flop at the box office, only making $650k on a $26M budget. Yikes. It forces Coppola to declare bankruptcy for his production company, American Zoetrope. I appreciate Coppola making films that he wants to make, rather than making films he knows will make money. But it’s difficult to even try to compare this to his many other famous projects, like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation and Rumble Fish. One from the Heart has that soul, but its plot is lackluster, and there wasn’t really a character I even had any interest in.
