Eight years removed from the initial disappointment, it's not so bad when the red band trailer isn't fresh in your mind. It still wildly underperforms as a comedy and the story leaves a fuck ton to be desired, but it's not painfully bad in a vacuum; it's just very, very bland and underwhelming. The world feels lived in, but they never really do anything with it. I had to keep stopping myself from attaching Greg the Bunny to the movie. Because The Happytime Murders does no meaningful world building, my brain really wanted to merge in my GtB knowledge to help it out. Really, if they just put this movie is that universe, it could only help, even if 90% of the audience has never heard of Greg the Bunny. Let's be real, the only times this movie is funny is when some of the shock value lands. I don't think there was ever any wordplay or jokes with set-up that landed, but there were a handful of times where some dumb shit they said caught me off guard. The puppets are well made and I didn't have any issues with the voice acting, but I stand behind my original review; there is nothing in the movie that is worth seeing that isn't in the red band trailer. Just track down the one season of Greg the Bunny that was on Fox.
