“You would've been happier if you'd chosen to join your mother in her world."
We’re starting off the Lone Wolf and Cub saga insanely strong. I’m instantly a big fan of Tomisaburô Wakayama. His Ogami Itto has an incredible amount of sauce, making him one of my favorite swordsmen in cinema. Great action, great dialogue, and a phenomenal protagonist come together and overpower my very minor criticisms.
The action in this thing is great. The blood flies off the screen, and Daigoro alongside Ogami Itto is magnetic. The sunset decapitation is also one of my favorite shots of all time. It’s insane, and the slow-mo effect just adds to it. The use of Daigoro in the fights is so much fun. Whether he’s just being held while Ogami slices through members of the Yagyu clan or blinding his dad’s foe, it’s a blast.
The pieces of nonlinear storytelling and an incredible hook had me engaged the whole time. You could say it slows down a bit once the two reach Go-no-Mori, but you find yourself hating the characters they meet there and are then rewarded with an incredible ending battle. I genuinely love this thing, and I can’t wait to see where this story goes in the other five films. It flew by, and I couldn’t get enough.
