Barely net positive rating in my head bc this didn’t suck total ass and the ending banged and the music was pretty dam good too
But fucking hell
More grossness
Jaw droppingly so, and was so so far from any necessity
Other, worse films have reached similar contextual consequence with completely different scenarios
If you want the story to go where it goes, use a different path to it
Any other path
This is why I’m about to be so dam harsh
I lose trust in the film when it pulls that shit out the bag
It felt like it enjoyed it, however ‘non-graphic’ it was, it spent time crafting that situation even though it could be so easily replaced with something else
So it makes me really despise the bits I didn’t like
Bc I can’t provide the benefit of the doubt for it yk
Otherwise it just hangs so long on empty moments and it’s so stunted and frustrating sometimes
Action is edging closer to something really great but I mean seriously it’s doing the bare minimum
Watch any other samurai film really that features a great big action sequence
It’s better than this
Its ’iconic blood spurting’ is pretty bland too
I love the red red RED but it’s rarely done anywhere near as well at the Zatoichi films
Really nothing is
These just lay ridiculously unflatteringly in those films shadow
Everything this tries to do, Ichi does better
Even a father-son bond is done better with a stranger child in like 3 different Ichi films than this soulless relationship between these protagonists
It’s laughable how un-compelling and un-investing everything is
I wouldn’t critique these films so harshly on these more emotive components should is excel in what it was promised to: mindless slash and bang
But it even does that pretty terribly if you ask me
So then Im examining anything else it might be doing to figure out if thats maybe what they’re for
It’s crazy it’s baffling
And on top of that, I prefer more emotionally driven action - as we see in the Ichi films - but it’s never even deep in them either
It’s a case by case light involvement in the story
Here it just sucks
I keep losing my train of thought bc it’s so easy to take the piss out of these
It skips everything I’d be interested in
How the fuck did they get a machine gun in the card off screen
How did that pass
Apart from when I hated it (and I really did at points) it was pretty great as well
But it’s great at framing something to look cool for a bit
Short form good filmmaking crammed into some soppy half assed business about some cool shit that is never done justice
But the short form good filmmaking bangs when it bangs
And that’s why I’m gna watch them all
Aaaaand I just love my samurai films too much to deny myself the pleasure of having seen them all
I love the formula
I love the world
I love the ‘preset’ characters and how they can be filmed
It’s just a case of seeing how different films treat these things I know I enjoy and love dearly
These aren’t pulling their weight so far
That’s that
