Kristofer Borgli’s feature directorial debut is the line blurring comedic docu-drama Drib, detailing the misadventures of Norwegian comedian Amir, who scams his way into a high end energy drink campaign, with equal parts hilarious and frustrating results.
It’s like that Michael Cera ad exec moment in Dream Scenario, but stretched to feature length. Here the ad exec is Stranger Things Brett Gelman, both insincere and insecure, who likes to think his own contribution to capitalism is to push the concept to such extremes that his actively bringing about its end. Yeah, keep telling yourself that buddy. Adam Pearson of Under the Skin fame is hilariously self aware, playing himself as another client on the marketing firm.
Amir is an interesting presence, totally benign in interaction, with a lack of sincerity that even the Hollywood bottom feeders he interacts with can’t match. Even his interaction with Borgli is tested, with a tendency to veer from the script, and a complete inability to ever read just what this dudes intention is.
The Drib branding is PERFECTION and mirrors exactly the cynical cash grab of the extreme sports fan base of the energy drink market.
