This was utterly stupid and beautiful.
“Thats the benefit of being a Marxist-Leninist, you can get out of anything.” Way to bone the man’s philosophy.
I think the Woody Allen portrayal of Godard was inaccurate and disrespectful. One so formally informed on Nihilism I doubt would ever whine about how things are the way they are. They portrayed him to be self centered and narcissistic taking away from the revolution movement making it more about his association to it rather than being a part of it. Making him a rude character. I feel very disrespectful to his views on cinema and the world. Half of the things he says about film I’m sure the real Godard would disagree (to a point). No matter if there is similarities between the portrayal of Godard and Godard its a very simplistic and cynical portrayal. We don’t get to understand his passion to art and the world looking past humanity’s flaws. Making him out to look pathetic rather than visual artistic revolutionary.
However I was very entertained the coloring the shots and the art felt very similar and reminiscent to Godard. Some say in a sickening way but I didn’t see so much of the over saturation in another director’s techniques. This film is definitely in its own font. However the I think in this we can do without the close up voice over monologue and the Brecht style of breaking the 4th wall its a gimmick to its actual use even though it mad me laugh.
I would have really liked this film if in some universe Godard wasn’t a person and this script was entirely fictional. But he is a real person and one of the most renowned and respected directors so this movie is disrespectful and not tributing any character especially not Godard.
