Absolutely insane movie and easily the second best one in the franchise!! That’s what you get when Tony Randel, who directed Hellbound: Hellraiser II, is in the director’s chair. Let me tell you, he directs the shit out of this movie. This thing is perverse, it’s full of grosstastic gore, it has so many incredible moments, and it goes back to the roots of Amityville by showcasing how evil corrupts people, tears families apart, and is synonymous with ideologies like fascism. This is a satirical, gory, terrifying, and somewhat silly movie that is criminally overlooked. I can tell that Randel implements some of the same ideas that were prevalent in Hellbound and when you think about it, Hellraiser and Amityville aren’t too dissimilar from each other. Anyway, one of the best things about this movie is its cast of characters. You got a dad whose going crazy and who has a disgusting bloody/pus-filled injured leg caused by a dog attack, you got a heavy metal teen who has a cool friendship with an old lady who can sense evil just like he can, you got a teenage girl who is majorly corrupted by the evil presence in her house (she lures her lustful boyfriend to his death and also brings incest back into the franchise by coming onto her brother, who is able to evade her advances by electrocuting her), and the cherry on top is the ex girlfriend of the dad who for some reason babysat her ex boyfriend’s kids while he was away on business (who also brought all of this evil upon the family due to a clock, yes you read that right a clock). First it was a lamp, now it’s a clock. Amityville is certainly one of a kind. The set pieces in this are really good too, especially the ones involving the aforementioned clock. You got black ooze (it’s not Amityville without it), you got people seeing things that aren’t real, you got blood, you got yellow pus, you got walls being ripped off to reveal the inner workings of the evil clock, you got an evil mirror that gropes, you got a van that drives on its own and kills people, you got a basement that is full of some kind of slimey gooey material that people sink into, and of course, time travel/dilation is utilized in this film which was something I didn’t expect, but this movie is all ABOUT TIME so I should’ve seen it coming. However, my absolute favorite thing about this movie is the shot of the modern house and then some lightning strikes and the frame switches to a shot of the original Amityville house and then back to the modern one. The new modern house even has the eye window thing going on, its GREAT!!! I wasn’t expecting this to be so good, but it’s amazing. Nothing will ever beat the second Amityville though, that one is just TOO good!!!!
