Variations is a 1998 American short silent avant-garde film directed by Nathaniel Dorsky. It is the second film in a set of "Four Cinematic Songs," which also includes Triste, Arbor Vitae, Love's Refrain.

In film there are two ways of including human beings. One is depicting human beings. Another is to create a film form which in itself has all the qualities of being human: tenderness, observation, fear, relaxation, the sense of stepping into the world and pulling back, expansion, contraction, changing, softening, tenderness of heart. As I’ve gotten into movies I’ve realized how common it is for a film to make me feel nostalgic. I think the commonality of generational childhood allows a director to be able to make a feel that triggers nostalgia. While I still think it’s impressive I’m less in awe when I see something do this than I was a year ago or so. Very rarely if ever have I seen a film that put you in the position of a child. Every shot from the rain drops falling on a glass windshield to flowers and rivers puts you into a position of being a child. Genuinely so powerful as a medium.

had Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard stuck in my head for the whole short film, and since i watched it on youtube there were like 3 ad breaks, aside from that this was great
