"You don't read the book. It reads you"
I remembered this movie being much better.
I think the main problem with the film is that it tries to adapt a book that's very difficult to adapt. I don't know if this was the best way to bring it to the screen. I wouldn't have done it this way.
The story itself isn't bad, they find an interesting way to adapt the book to film, but it makes the mistake of ending up as a generic horror movie. The same old cliches, the same characters, the same ending, and minimal character development.
I couldn't feel any affection for any of the characters, probably because most of their decisions seemed incredibly stupid to me. As I said, they're also underdeveloped, including Stella, whose past is briefly touched upon, but it's so irrelevant to the plot that it makes absolutely no difference whether it's mentioned or not.
I will say that the movie isn't boring per se. I liked the color palette, and I think the designs are quite good.
It's not terrible, I have no problem watching it, but its problems are much more noticeable than its virtues.
