For a film that was directed by Paul Dano and starring Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal, I’m shocked that it has less than 100k watchers. It deserves more attention despite it being in the Criterion Collection.
There’s so much that I loved about this film. It’s a great directorial debut from Paul. The performances are what stood out most to me. Jake and Ed Oxenbould (the cringy rap boy from The Visit) gave great performances, but Carey’s performance stole the spotlight. I’m shocked that she was snubbed of an Oscar nomination. Honestly, it’s a better performance than her Oscar nominated one in Promising Young Woman.
I also thought that it was well shot, edited and composed. It’s probably one of the best coming of age films I’ve seen in a while. Very highly recommended!
