I have such a deep-seated love for this movie. The cinematography, mood, and genuine authenticity stun me every time I watch it. Denzel as Bleek is incredible and perfectly evokes the journey John Coltrane took in creating "A Love Supreme," as clearly reflected in the finale, utilizing the track Acknowledgement. Both, initially hindered and motivated by frivolous desires and burdened by the belief that music is their only purpose in the world, at their lowest point, awaken to an entirely new world, inconceivable to the person they once were.
In many ways, I believe many young, talented, ambitious men see themselves in Bleek- in carrying the burden of achievements solely driven by the ego; creating and succeeding not out of love or appreciation or a more holy calling. To that, this film has an answer: There is no greater satisfaction, no greater peace than succeeding for another.
