genuinely one of the most visually and aesthetically unique and beautiful films I’ve seen. the camera work here is top notch, with the set design and colour grading being amazing. this is such a strange film, full of disturbing moments and providing a really interesting character study.
The central theme of a third eye and how technology has in a sense become our third eye, how it can distort the world and people, leading to madness and obsession as seen with our protagonist and fake illnesses supposedly driving her obsessions.
obsession & trauma are explored in a way only Satō could do. violence contrasted with beautiful yet isolating landscapes, the experimental camera work, haunting yet beautiful score. god this film really was like nothing I’ve seen before. that scene with the shadows fighting in front of the eye projection… perfect.
maybe even my new favourite Satō film, easily could be a 5 star on rewatch. there really is no one else like Hisayasu Satō!
