oh my god. this might be the most unexpected 5-stars i’ve ever given. i love the many times when it forgets it’s a kids movie and goes completely balls to the wall. the action is amazing, and not to mention how well-done the yokai costumes are. the cgi was poor at times but honestly, i didn’t find it all that distracting– it was more charming than anything. all of the characters were quite likable and/or interesting too, namely the main protagonist tadashi, the furry sidekick sunekosuri, and the awesome agi. it reminded me of the first time i saw the 90s gamera trilogy for the first time, which was incredible in its own right

41st Miike Movie!
This movie rocks.
This might be the most absurd and ridiculous movie I’ve ever seen but my god I was entertained the entire time. The CGI has aged very poorly yes, but that’s never really bothered me and I’m especially not bothered by it because the costume designs in this movie ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD. SERIOUSLY THE COSTUME DESIGNERS AND ART TEAM HERE DID AN INCREDIBLE JOB like even the weird looking CGI robots have really incredible designs. I cannot explain enough how good it all looks. I’m watching the behind the scenes now and Miike spent a year a half working on this! that’s a long time for the amount of movies he makes I mean wow I think all of that hard work really paid off cause this movies great.
I absolutely love this movie and I would honestly say it’s one of my favorites from Miike? Not like top 10 but at LEAST top 15. Is that crazy to say idk but I really really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to check out the sequel. No idea why the sequel came out 15 years after the original but I guess we’ll see if it’s any good!
