an absolute matryoshka doll of a flick. creeping anxiety kept me on edge throughout the entire run time, leaving me just as trapped as everyone else in the movie. the ito-esque use of spirals throughout is visually stunning, drawing us further down the rabbit hole right along with michael lerner’s john pressman. seeing this in theaters must be a trip.

Not often can a movie simultaneously remind me of In The Mouth Of Madness, Angst, Funny Games, Berberian Sound Studio and Elephant. Surprised how under seen this is.

Not often can a movie simultaneously remind me of In The Mouth Of Madness, Angst, Funny Games, Berberian Sound Studio and Elephant. Surprised how under seen this is.

I don’t want to spoil anything because this is such an under-seen gem, and I hope at least one person reads this review and is encouraged to watch this film. But Anguish is of the most creative and original horror films I’ve ever seen. Its horror is absolutely effective and unlike anything for the time. It’s indescribably hypnotic, which makes sense given the subject matter. It’s also insanely meta, and reminded me of a mix of Scream and a fun little niche horror film called Popcorn (1991).

It’s a very interesting look at how horror films can affect people, specifically psychopaths. And need I remind you this film released 9 years before Scream, if that tells you anything about how ahead of its time it is.There’s a line from Billy Loomis in the original Scream where he says;
“Movies don't create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative!”
While I don’t agree with what the film is trying to say, Anguish is still a horrifying film that could, and has happened in real life.

Ein Film auf hohem Meta Niveau welcher vor allem ohne Vorwissen und in einem vollen Saal richtig reinhaut. So sehr wie eine Nadel direkt ins Auge. In viele Augen. So viele Augen. Sehr hypnotisch und einfach verstörend.
