Gong li and yimou with another stunning and intense opening scene where the emotions overflow and the character's destiny is foreshadowed? Absolutely! After the arrival of Gong li at the winery the movie somewhat loses composure. The grandpa is a total jerk. The term "quasi-matriarchal community" is a little misused, even with the word quasi. The narrator-grandson telling their story in the form of a legend does not offer a lot of depth and the invasion of the japanese feels somewhat unconnected to the whole.
I think that i will remember this film more for the bold and intense opening than the whole.

De eerste helft voelt echt als een hele andere film dan de tweede helft. De eerste helft is een soort romantische komedie met echt een van de grappigste shots die ik in tijden heb gezien en de tweede helft is gewoon pure depressie en afschuw. Is ook wel logisch gezien welke belangrijke gebeurtenis in de tweede helft plaatsvindt. Verder is Jiang Wens personage erg relatable aangezien ik ook een moord zou plegen voor Gong Li.

Went into this completely blind and I wasn’t super convinced on the first act alone, despite the gorgeous visuals, I wasn’t sure what the film was trying to say, but once the 2nd part of the act takes place - it all made sense and it leaves an extremely potent and powerful message.

It especially comes from a deep place of authenticity too based off the background that Zhang Yimou grew up in and his family’s generational history. Very powerful.
