38/100
So, I'll start by saying I was expecting something way worse, but this movie had a few redeeming qualities. First of all, the score is pretty good, and the direction is good too, even though I have some issues with it, which I'll explore later.
In this film, unlike most Disney live-action films, you can see that there is an intention of making something new, not something that is only politically correct, but also not a copy of the original. Lowery wants to show the value of growing, in contrast to the eternal youth depicted in the original. The idea, however, is watered down by Disney's imposition: overly sentimental material, an awful development of characters, and the need to be politically correct (Tiger Lily is completely useless and could have been easily cut out of the film). The colours are overly dark, and while they worked in the last half of the film, the introduction could have been brighter and more joyous to express the contrast between youth and growth.
MIght have been way worse, but also way better: the seeds were there, but the usual Disney live-action remake shit didn't allow it.
