As with most Disney live-actions, Aladdin is significantly worse than its animated namesake. It has its upsides: the beautiful sets and costumes, and the fairly decent CGI, but the downsides far outweigh them. For starters, a lot of the main characters were badly cast, in my opinion; Naomi Scott may be half Indian, but she's not a great actress, and so while she looked gorgeous as Jasmine, her performance fell very flat. Jafar is such an iconic villain, but Marwan Kenzari absolutely does not suit the role. There's not an ounce of evil in his portrayal, and the result is a lacklustre villain with not a drop of menace or the theatricality required. Will Smith is an alright actor, but he definitely had big shoes to fill, so unfortunately his Genie just doesn't hit the same way Robin Williams' version did. Acting aside, the score is pretty good, but the songs either sound the same as in the original film or are just terrible altogether. On the whole, not a film I'm thrilled about, and definitely not one I'd want to rewatch in the future; I'm sticking with the OG.
