Rational, exacting, and self-controlled theater director, Henrik Vogler, often stays after rehearsal to think and plan. On this day, Anna comes back, ostensibly looking for a bracelet. She is the lead in his new production of Strindberg's A Dream Play. She talks of her hatred for her mother, now dead, an alcoholic actress, who was Vogler's star and lover.

After the Rehearsal
Don’t be fooled by the “made for TV” label, because After the Rehearsal is still a solid film and, although this is far from being Bergman at his best, you can still find some typical Bergmanians elements.

This is an actors film, meaning it works due to their sheer talent. The performances by Erland Josephson, Ingrid Thulin and Lena Olin are a delight and worth the watch alone.

I get it, but it’s not my favorite Bergman. I felt claustrophobic with all the tight shots of the actors and never felt engaged with any of the dialogue. I think I need to revisit when I’m in a better mood ha
