This film was so tedious, long, and so slow paced that I'm not even going to give this film a fair rating. I can't give this film a fair rating because I had no idea what was going on and I wasn't it did not hold my interest at alI. I lost interest from this film almost at the very beginning and I started to dose off like I was in History of Film I and II all over again in film school. My god this film is just dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. My mom mentioned this was similar to a soap opera and I think she's right. The sets and camera angles looked like one.
My god this film's dialogue scenes go on for like 15 damn minutes and just a one and a two shot. It's actually just so boring. The dialogue is cute for about two minutes then they just keep talking and taking. I hate to say it but I felt like a kid watching those old ass movies thinking they're so boring. I guess I need so much stimulation that this film didn't do it for me. But what I don't understand is that Ozu was able to make films exactly like this film and make them so captivating to watch with his beautiful writing, but more importantly he made his films look beautiful and unique so that the emotional dialogue scene wouldn't bore you, and he was able to achieve this in the 1930s!! This film was made in the 1980s! I mean this film didn't have any pickup shots of anything. It was exactly like I was watching a film, filmed like a sitcom but without funny jokes.
I was really disappointed with this film because I rented it because of the beautiful poster and also because it was Criterion. I was expecting to see copious amount of shots of the Sakura in the spring, but there is so little of that that I got ragebaited. Just from a filmmaking standpoint this needed more shots of outside my god. Every single scene takes place in the same Japanese style house and not of outside with the cherry blossoms.
I just didn't care about anything or anybody because this film just dragged on so much good lord.
