Wow, what a great way to start off a new era of godzilla! From very early on, the impact of advances in filmmaking technology in the years between terror of mechagodzilla and this film can be felt viscerally, this movie makes great use of a number of full sets that they can move, flood, or otherwise manipulate to really make the action in the film feel more real.
The tone of the movie also leans back into the more horrific tone of the original movie, which is a smart play. It really makes what would have been pretty silly sequences in the previous set of films hit much harder. The new Godzilla suit also has a lot more articulation and is much more expressive, and (aside from the fact that Godzilla is now constantly rolling his eyes 🙄) conveys a lot more intensity and predatory energy than the older suits could. This also contributes to Godzilla feeling like a much more real threat than some of the previous films had achieved.
Also a lot of the human plots were interesting as well! Whereas the prior films had quickly shifted to an international coalition of nations dealing with the kaiju, this film much more singularly valorizes the Japanese government while justifiably making the US and the USSR seem like nuke-happy psychopaths, which, to be fair, they were, especially the US in the 80s.
Lots of fun miniature work too, the Super X design was cool and its whole duel with Godzilla was rad as hell. I particularly liked that after the ship crashes, Godzilla drops an entire building on it just to be sure. The movie's ending sequence is also surprisingly emotional. Overall, I'm really excited to get into this next era of Godzilla movies thanks to this reintroduction!
