Bound For Glory is about the musician Woody Guthrie. Bound For Glory features few songs, fewer concerts and a curious distance from its subject — especially so for a music biopic, the genre where creative introspection goes to die.
But really there’s no better way to study a guy who hated fame and, in a way, was largely successful in avoiding it than to just sit on his shoulder and go along for the ride. It’s impressionistic in the way A Complete Unknown also is, if there a bit more clumsily direct.
Both are about a time more than they are a man — or about a man who so embodied, affected and was of a time that using him as a lens lets you get a more accurate picture of that time than any documentary would be able to.
Woody Guthrie was a man who liked to wander, didn’t like to be told what to do and, most importantly, fucking hated Nazis — whether they be in Germany, or right here at home, using billy clubs to bust up a wildcat strike in the Midwest. Using that as a yardstick, yeah Bound For Glory is a success — if that glory you’re talking about is sleeping on the top of a train. Because hell yeah brother, Woody Guthrie found his glory in the end.
