Hester Street is the most authentic portrayal of immigrant Jewish life in America that I’ve seen. Of all the challenges and obstacles that carve a more difficult path for Jews to be accepted, particularly in the U.S, Hester Street emphasizes what binds us: loyalty, stories, and tradition. However, there is also a stubbornness or unwillingness to conform, which some view as a disadvantage. Hester Street highlights the themes of culture versus conformity, old country or new, Yiddish or English, and it does so with a childlike curiosity, but with a heartbreaking effect. Although my ancestors arrived in America about 30 years after the characters in this film, I felt Hester Street sincerely personal. 4/5.
