I mean this type of thing is beautiful, carnal, it’s a feast for the eyes it’s sexy and fun and translates these ideas perfectly to film. It’s crime thriller fever dream set with a twinge of western all in a beautiful Mediterranean setting. You could close your eyes and geek over the sound design or watch only the cinematography and lighting which minus one or two minutes is immaculate. Which the most awesome thing about this is how it feels like a relic of the past, like it was meant to be filmed in technicolor or hitting screens in the 70’s with their style of precision filmmaking and equipment. All this movie is, is incredible style with a backdrop of substance.
By backdrop of substance I mean this, with these filmmakers I have found they don't typically have a fully formed story. It’s like recounting a memory or playing telephone, the content becomes more abstract over time and this feels like the end product of that process. It’s non-linear and unemotional in the way that the pace doesn’t leave time for sentimentality but is sentimental for a time already passed.
I think I am at a point in my life where I am generally unbothered by sex and sexuality. Same thing for gore and violence. The act of like looking away from it all is like a slight admission that things that are overtly sexual or explicit in nature are inherently wrong or disgusting in a way. Which i find often that when I’m watching with friends they’re generally perturbed by sex scenes or by self-mutilation, that i dont feel which might be maturity or desensitization. there’s a whole conversation to be had about sexual violence there but. still there were moments where the oozing lust where a bit much for me and I tend to find that a rarity. Maybe a cultural difference or something but I do like how they include sex and sexuality as a neutral portrayal where there are kinky things and there are sexual moments but that’s all they are. They aren't moral applications, they’re just statements, like facts, but it was excessive, which I’m not even talking about the pissing or the ropes but having the random ass lady getting her clothes blasted off? What the fuck why man or the scene with the girl painted in gold. I lost the plot here i could explain better in person.
It’s highly unusual and not suitable for general audiences, especially ones afraid of erotic media or for people that need things to make sense. But there’s also beauty in such things and the abstract. Which, made this this a fun watch which might be excessive by nature. IMO
