Director- Nishitani Hiroshi.I watched this film to see how good the original adaptation of the book- Devotion of Subject X will be. It is far better than Jaane Jaan in terms of the ending.Suspect X is not about the lady who killed her ex-husband, but instead about the friend of the mathematician. It is about his journey into understanding love and how far it pushes one. The acting is also far better, with the protagonist acting such superbly that we can understand what is going on in his head. Whenever he sits to think, we are also trying to unravel the mystery with him.The ending is also much better with the protagonist being dumbfounded at having underestimated his friend as well as not considering the variable of love, which he already knew about. The film's major issue is that the point of view switches to too many characters and Nishitani tries to have them develop separately as well. It works in the disfavour as the characters aren't fleshed out enough. The character accompanying our protagonist doesn't get a satisfying ending and doesn't get enough importance to justify her inclusion beyond the point that the protagonist decides to work on the case. The film also wastes the moral dilemma of whether killing an antagonistic person is wrong or right. It could have led to a much better story arc, as the protagonist would have had to really sit and ponder about it.Overall, it is a good thriller, but could have been great but it leaves much to be wanted. It is still the best adaptation of the book that I have seen with the Chinese and Indian version pailing in comparison. Hope Nishitani's other mystery films will be better.
