with a character named blacula, you’d expect this to be a satirical take on dracula but surprisingly i found myself to be deeply intrigued watching this. despite how corny it all might feel, there’s a raw, visceral core to everything. and in terms of visuals it delivers, whether you’re talking about the cinematography in view of terror or the subjects in frame with stunningly groovy outfits to contrast with the bright red blood.
there’s always a presence of white oppression and even if “white america” isn’t as dominant as it was, this film doesn’t excuse that fact even with the very little presence of any white person. taking away the pure concept of what eroticism means in vampire literature and making it more personal for the black community. speaking volumes of black on black violence provoked by the struggles of surviving in white-dominated conditions through the blood that’s drained through people.
somehow this film stays frightening and saddening the same way meanwhile changing the formula of vampirism in different historical literature. not only is this film fun and cheesy at points, there’s a lot of passionate weight attached to this and you could feel it. probably the greatest vampire film i’ve ever seen.
