Mhmm. This is one of my favorite operas, adapted from one of my favorite books, and I feel I cannot help but be a little more critical about what I just watched. Will start by saying that it took me AGES to find this. I first learned Sofia was involved in this years ago, but could never find it. Finally did. Production wise, this looks amazing—kudos to Nathan Crowley, he made a terrific job bringing the world surrounding Violetta to life. The bedroom, in shades of royal blue; the grand saloon, where the parties come to life; the magnificent staircase… that took my breath away. How her gown—Violetta’s gown—perfectly falls onto this gigantic staircase. Beautiful. There are very pretty gowns, and suits, but it’s not all that Valentino as promised (or as we might’ve thought, really), but it’s okay.
Sofia does an amazing job at directing. Well, her and Francesca Nesler. The cast is good, but I am extremely biased towards my favorite Violetta, Anna Netrebko, that might as well not really be everyone’s cup of tea. The performances were good, nonetheless. I don’t wanna sound like an entitled, pretentious asshole by saying this sucked, cause it didn’t. But I feel there’s something missing, although I cannot really put my finger on what exactly.
Still cried to this, though. Will forever cry to this.
