SAVE MONEY. LIVE BETTER!In terms of legacy sequels, this one isn't bad at all. In fact, this movie shockingly hasn't aged too badly (apart from one glaring thing that has always freaked me out). It's definitely full of the typical nostalgic callbacks that can be hit or miss, but Jason Reitman added enough to this movie to avoid it feeling like a retread of the original.
The new characters aren't bad at all, and Phoebe is a fun lead. Carrie Coon provides some good character drama, Paul Rudd is fun, and Finn Wolfhard is there. Something that helps is that we are given time to care about them, as opposed to throwing the old character in towards the beginning, like in The Force Awakens. The old Ghostbusters looked like they wanted to be there, unlike the 2016 movie, where it looked like Bill Murray wasn't even on set with the leading ladies. The character drama is a welcome addition to this story, and it does balance out nostalgia and new stuff well, such as a quieter setting.
The Egon ghost has never sat well with me, even when I first watched this movie, as it comes across as extremely awkward and uncanny. It works emotionally, but otherwise it's...somewhat disturbing. The humor doesn't work too well with me either, but there are some dry deliveries that echo the original to a tee. Overall, it's a fairly entertaining romp that will certainly be better than Frozen Empire.
