If you like seeing badasses kill hundreds of people in glorious, bloody fashion, then this movie is for you. This has the best action out of any movie I’ve watched, which is great because most of the movie is fighting. Amazing choreography and set pieces, and I liked the main story and characters quite a bit.

As much as I love Miike’s sense of style and tendencies toward excess, I feel like he is somewhat shackled by the source material too much. Instead of a fun propulsive revenge narrative, it feels very start-stop due to what feels like Miike being beholden to adapting each story arc from the original manga. Nevertheless, the action is awesome and there’s a few really great bits of physical comedy involving Manji’s regenerative abilities.

This was Miike’s 100th film and man did he deliver on it. This shit is still so damn cool even after a rewatch. The only issue I can think of is just the pacing can be a bit iffy but the action and violence makes up for it without a doubt. I think my favorite part about this is that you don’t even need to know anything about the manga in order to appreciate this movie and I feel like that’s how all live action manga adaptations should be. They need to please the fans of the manga but also make sure that it attracts new fans too and this movie definitely succeeds at both.
