I loved the Margaret Lawrence novel this movie is based on and I love supporting Canadian authors, so read that before you watch this. It’s a good movie, albeit a bit bland, and it’s anchored by a phenomenal Woodward performance. To quote Ady Jackson: joanne is an angel and my Virgin Mary.

While there are some interesting things going on in this movie with Joanne Woodward playing the lead well, the pacing is all over the place, the editing is too jumpy, the narrative is a mess when it could of been much better. The use of flashbacks/imagination were also used far too often and didn’t help me appreciate the character any more.
