Die Wikinger ist eines dieser großartigen historischen und abenteuerlichen Epen, die die 50er Jahre hervorbrachten. Der Film ist nicht wirklich historisch authentisch, insbesondere wenn es um Figuren und die Handlung geht, doch fängt er die Atmosphäre dieser Zeit, sowie ihr Gefühl überraschend gut ein. Natürlich ist vieles von klassischen Hollywood-Klischees behaftet, dennoch kann der Film überzeugen. Kirk Douglas und hervorragend und auch Tony Curtis kann hier glänzen. Der Film nutzt tolle Kostüme und Ausrüstung, hat einen epischen Soundtrack und zeigt malerische, unangetastete Natur. Gedreht wurde unter anderem in Norwegen, was allem tatsächlich doch einen ziemlich authentischen Look verleiht. Nichts ist wie gesagt wirklich historisch authentisch, doch geht es wie bei so vielen, ähnlichen Werken dieser Zeit nicht unbedingt um den historischen Kontext, sondern mehr um ein Gefühl für die Zeit zu bekommen.

Die Wikinger vereinfacht alle möglichen tatsächlichen Umstände stark, doch wird uns eine Geschichte geboten, die alles zum Teil zu bieten hat, die uns ein fantastisches Abenteuer gibt, voll Heldenmut, Standhaftigkeit, Ehre, sowie den Enthusiasmus, über sich hinaus zu wachsen. Der Kampf ist für die Helden geschaffen und Ehre gebührt denen, die ihn meistern. Der Tod mit dem Schwerte in der Hand ist das höchste Gut eines Mannes.

Die 50er waren wirklich etwas besonderes, etwas beeindruckendes. Hier wurden Geschichten in einem Ausmaß geschmiedet und auf die große Leinwand geworfen, wie es später nie mehr so oft geschehen würde.

***The Vikings is one of those magnificent historical and adventurous epics that emerged in the 1950s. The film isn’t actually historically accurate, especially when it comes to the characters and the plot, but it captures the atmosphere of that era, as well as its spirit, surprisingly well. Of course, much of it is steeped in classic Hollywood clichés, yet the film still manages to be captivating. Kirk Douglas is outstanding, and Tony Curtis also shines here. The film features great costumes and equipment, has an epic soundtrack, and showcases picturesque, untouched nature. Part of the film was shot in Norway, which in fact gives everything a fairly authentic look. As mentioned, nothing is truly historically accurate, but as with so many similar works of that era, the focus isn’t necessarily on the historical context, but rather on capturing the spirit of the time.

The Vikings greatly simplifies all sorts of actual circumstances, yet we’re offered a story that has a little bit of everything, giving us a fantastic adventure full of heroism, steadfastness, honor, and the enthusiasm to rise above oneself. The battle is made for heroes, and honor belongs to those who master it. Death with a sword in hand is a man’s greatest blessing.

The ’50s were truly something special, something remarkable. Never again would stories be forged and brought to the big screen on such a grand scale as they were back then.***

I got kind of sad because it is almost impossible in terms of production to recreate this movie, or any similar, now because of CGI. Yes, bring back practical effects.

The Eureka! blu ray release of this is beautiful. What they were doing with fog back in the day was a magical thing.

Also there are so so many frames in here that would serve as a great background image and like none of them are available to use. Boo 👎

This movie is just a western that isn't a western. The setpieces are fantastic but also just constantly scream, "WE'RE A WESTERN"
