I’m so conflicted on Get Out Your Handkerchiefs. On the one hand, the first half of this film is great. I love the two main leads of this film. They are great actors and I love the chemistry they have between them. The themes of the first half are also great. I love how it explores the bumbling man-child when it comes to not understanding another person’s feelings, especially when it their own wife! But my big issue comes with the second half of the film. We are grown to feel sympathy for Solange, but then she starts a relationship with a 13 year old. Not only that, but this film is really weirdly graphic during those scenes. It leaves you questioning what the themes and messaging of the film is if everyone is pretty terrible and oblivious. I think that is kinda the point, everyone is kinda a bit terrible and self-absorbed even if we don’t think they are. My problem comes with the execution. I don’t like how they don’t really hint at Solange’s nature or foreshadow more about her character so the second half would make more sense. I also hate the scenes with her and the child. Too explicit. But there are a lot of really great comedic moments throughout this film. I was laughing at so much. I overall do enjoy the themes of this film as well as the director. Get Out Your Handkerchiefs is a flawed film. But I do appreciate what it tried to do even if I definitely don’t agree with it’s execution. Still, I’d recommend like 2/3rds of this film.
