Another fantastic existential western from Monte Hellman, I think I preferred this to Ride in the Whirlwind 1966 because of the increased complexity and depth in theme, it felt a lot more nihilistic with many more interesting visual elements. I liked the lack of clarity within the storytelling and how this creating a real sense of unease and mystery in the atmosphere; Jack Nicholson’s character really helped with this feeling, he was very cool and confident but had a weird ghostly, alienating vibe that was very interesting. Overall I really enjoyed this one, very bleak and gritty but it was still very enjoyable. That final scene was really something special.
These two Hellman features are really intriguing actually, I think he shot both of them at a similar time with an overlapping cast (Jack Nicholson). Really cool.

Interesting take on the Western genre here. It does lack the thrill of some of its counterparts, but I actually really enjoyed it. Warren Oates and Jack Nicholson are great together.

**What the hell!

This was incredible not half bad for it’s time not gonna lie. I thought it was brilliant bit of a slow start to the film but once Billy’s character was properly introduced it all kicked off.
I felt so bad for Coley, he was just a nice guy trying to help bless him he was so sweet. His death omg no stop 😔 so sad.
Will after Coley’s death was just in anger and deep depression you could see that pain he felt and the anger against Billy for killing him.
The fight near the end between Billy and Will was a bit pathetic but it was good enough if you know what I mean not half bad. Ending could have been so much better to be honest. You could clearly see that Billy was going to die as he was stranded but I think Will should of killed him then the woman just leave Will stranded but that’s what I would of done but hey ho.
I definitely recommend if you are looking for a good western style thriller with twists and turns, good characters and story.

all I kept thinking for the first half was Is it THE Jack Nicholson or is it another actor who happens to have the same name? Will I even recognize if it’s him or not?
Like playing spot the difference with the same picture

I liked this movie even though i didnt really understand or see a point on this story. Jack nicholsons character has a really dark aura to him
