Love is shown as a delicate,sensual feeling here which is beautiful to see. At a lot of times this felt like In the mood for love which I also love. Longing and yearning theme are done very well.
You don't need to tell everything about a character, you can just show it and this film does that very creatively. Time and colour play a very important role in the film. Flashbacks and the present often coincide in the film and tries to portray the internal psyche of both the characters in the past and also in the present. For Anne the present is in black and white and the past is colour but for jean-louis the present is in colour but the past is in b/w. This shows how both the characters deal with grief and loss. Anne tries to internalise it, so in the outside she laughs, smiles like any other but carries and holds a very deep pain. This is the reason she can't move on. Anouk Aimée plays the character of Anne with grace, She oozes charm in this role.
Jean-louis also grieves for the loss of his wife, but for him meeting anne changes the look he has on life. It brings colour to his life, so even though he is sad he moves on.
Very different personalities but somehow seem perfect for each other.
Another very beautiful thing I noticed was how in the beginning when the music plays, the piano notes are delayed, saying that for jean things are going really slow but as the film goes on it picks up pace. When he drives from monte carlo to Paris that's when he accepts that he loves her, so the music is played in correct note. When he finally finds her, it is a cheering moment for him so the notes go faster. This is why small things matter, it says that the filmmakers actually care about what they are making.
