An interesting satire on the nature of cowardice in the absurdity of wartime and the over-idealized obsession over heroism, of course brought to you by our always lovable pal Paddy Chayefsky. Honestly, I'm surprised this movie isn't that well know. Hell, I only heard of this movie because the Johnny Mandel theme "Emily" is one of my favorite jazz standards. While this was made in the early days of the Vietnam war, the anti-war message this film presents would become more favorable as the sixties progressed, but it probably still could remain controversial even now. I'd love to have discussions with people about this movie, but that requires others to actually watch it. Honestly, I still need to settle with this film some more and probably give it a rewatch or two.
In the meantime, Andrews and Garner are both wonderful here. But Melvyn Douglas and James Coburn steal the show with their practically delusional obsession of pointlessly dying a hero. While I am biased on this fact, you will be humming the title tune for a while after watching.
