I had a lot of fun with this. The Ben Hecht script is incredible and very witty. Something unexpected that stuck out to me in this film was the camerawork, there's several very cool revolving shots alongside side a few experimental things that really added to the film.

Is it just me, or is the cinematography and editing of this thing extraordinary for an early sound film?! Obviously His Girl Friday is still the best version of this story, and in desperate need of a rewatch on my end, but this more black comedy version that's seemingly closer to the play is quite as effective on its own. Definitely a better made film than Wilder's take as well, and needless to say a much much better film than fucking Cimarron...

‘His Girl Friday’ was better!

I mean, sure, it’s kind of fun and it’s quippy and even incorporates some truly dizzying camera work (whether that’s a pro probably depends on how much of a headache you’ve got going in). I was never bored. But it’s also less fun and less clever and less visually interesting than a million other dialogue-centric Classic Hollywood films, including its superior successor His Girl Friday. It’s also frequently demeaning to everyone but the white “newspaper men”. The Front Page is a look at some of the great things to come out of the 30s, but in itself it’s just kind of... mediocre.
