I didn’t expect to connect with Wonder Wheel as much as I did, but here we are—I suppose I just have a soft spot for Allen’s artistic voice. It’s a whimsical, dreamlike film anchored by Kate Winslet’s powerhouse performance. The whole cast is solid—even Justin Timberlake—but Winslet is operating on an entirely different level, and I really like the direction her character takes.
Visually, Wonder Wheel is stunning. The colors are vibrant, the cinematography masterful, and while I can’t help but wish it had been shot on film, it’s still a treat to look at. Admittedly, this isn’t Allen’s sharpest script, but as I’ve said before, even “average Allen” is still pretty darn good.
