an illegally understated film, i never thought a black and white movie would actually entertain me and im glad this was my first one. i was hooked.
the director was set on highlighting religious dogmatism and the strong patriarchy that has a claw over india and just south asia in general, without any fear of what the public would have to say. he just wanted to have his message established and heard, which he did. it’s well known that this film shook india when it came out. a clear representation of the absurdity and ridiculousness of certain aspects of religion, especially if practiced in a corrupt manner.
don’t even get me started on the casting- the actress playing doyamoyee did such a good job portraying how women were made to submit and even accepted such treatment as normal.
